In our shelter to service program, we assess dogs who are at shelters looking for homes to determine if they would be appropriate service dog candidates. We adopt dogs from shelters and begin their foundations of service dog training which will prepare them for service work.
Dogs who pass their tests move on to service work and are paired with clients in a mutually beneficial working relationship. Dogs who do not meet program requirements for service work are placed into pet homes.
A potential service dog should be confident, positive and friendly. They should be able to approach new situations ready to learn.
A dog who should not be a service dog include those who get stressed when around new situations or people. Service dogs should not be fearful nor bark, lunge or growl at strangers.
If you are looking for a service dog, please see our “Service Dog” page for more information.
Shelters and dog rescue shelters can contact us and to request an assessment at training@outrunrescue.com

Kona was a pound dog from Alliston who was removed from an animal welfare situation when she was about 6 months old. She knows her basic obedience cues and has begun the foundation for service dog training and public access training. She would be suited to a variety of tasks including (but not limited to) mobility work, DPT, PTSD work, and alerts.
Kona arrived with her name but we tend to call her Kona Cafe - a favourite restaurant at the Polynesian Resort.
Kona (Indigo/Gogo) is now "working" as a Therapy dog in a children's reading program.
Female / Puppy / Whippet-Boxer cross
Whisper was one of a litter of puppies who arrived from a “too many dogs” situation. In all, 23 dogs were removed from the residence. Whisper arrived when she was only 4 days old so we were able to provide Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) to the entire litter of puppies as well as early socialization opportunities.
Before her third month, Whisper had traveled to multiple different locations, ridden in an elevator, on a trolley cart, and met a multitude of people. Whisper has been properly socialized with both adult dogs and puppies. She has a healthy relationship with the foster home’s resident cat and children.
Whisper has started her basic obedience training and soon will begin to navigate dog friendly public places. She has started her foundations for service dog training.
Whisper received her name from a name draw on our Facebook page - thank you to all of the participants! She is now "working" as an ESD support dog in a medical clinic.
