In our shelter to service program, we assess dogs who are at shelters looking for homes to determine if they would be appropriate service dog candidates. We adopt dogs from shelters and begin their foundations of service dog training which will prepare them for service work.
Dogs who pass their tests move on to service work and are paired with clients in a mutually beneficial working relationship. Dogs who do not meet program requirements for service work are placed into pet homes.
A potential service dog should be confident, positive and friendly. They should be able to approach new situations ready to learn.
A dog who should not be a service dog include those who get stressed when around new situations or people. Service dogs should not be fearful nor bark, lunge or growl at strangers.
If you are looking for a service dog, please see our “Service Dog” page for more information.

Female / 1 yrs old / Belgian Malinois.
Kona was a pound dog from Alliston who was removed from an animal welfare situation when she was about 6 months old. She knows her basic obedience cues and has begun the foundation for service dog training and public access training. She would be suited to a variety of tasks including (but not limited to) mobility work, DPT, PTSD work, and alerts.
Female / Puppy / Whippet-Boxer cross
TBA was one of a litter of puppies who arrived from a “too many dogs” situation. In all, 23 dogs were removed from the residence. TBA arrived when she was only 4 days old so we were able to provide ENS to the entire litter of puppies as well as early socialization opportunities.
Before her third month, TBA had traveled to multiple different locations, ridden in an elevator, met a multitude of people in a play environment with her siblings, and had been fed by people of all different shapes, smells and sizes. TBA has been properly socialized with both adult dogs and puppies. She has a healthy relationship with the foster home’s resident cat and children.
TBA has started her basic obedience training and soon will begin to navigate dog friendly public places. She has started her foundations for service dog training. At this time her suitability for specific tasks has not yet been assessed however her attentiveness and quick to learn tendencies provide her with many options.
